Year-old restaurant unable to withstand challenges of economy
Rhythm ’n Brews restaurant and bar has closed its doors after bringing live music and karaoke competitions to Saukville for less than a year.
The venue opened at 150 S. Foster Dr. last September. It is owned by business partners Chris Greene and John Sladky.
“I am disappointed, but this is the life of an entrepreneur. I remain committed to bringing entertainment to this community,” Greene said.
Greene also owns La Chimenea Authentic Mexican Restaurant in Germantown. Plans are in the works to convert the Saukville location into the north branch of that restaurant as early as next month.
“I look at this as a tactical change,” Greene said. “Rhythm ’n Brews will remain an entity, but we are just putting it on the shelf for now. Maybe it was the economy or the location, but something just didn’t click. In this business, you always have to have a Plan B.”
The Rhythm ’n Brews staff was told Monday that they no longer have jobs. Groups with party reservations have been also been notified that the restaurant is out of business.
Last March, the restaurant owners approached the Village of Saukville seeking to tap the community’s revolving loan fund for $50,000.
The fund was created to promote business development and retention.
At that time, Community Development Director Brian Biernat said the influx of capital was needed to counter the effects of a slumping economy.
“The business opened its doors in August 2009, in the midst of a lingering national economic recession and has an immediate need to augment its access to capital to assist with operating expenses,” Biernat said.
Village trustees voted 4-3 against granting the loan, with some concerns expressed about the long-term viability of the business.
In response to that board vote, Greene said he still believed the business would succeed.
“I firmly believe Rhythm ’n Brews is on the right track. We have seen progress in the right direction, and have responded to the kinds of things the people of Saukville have said they wanted from us,” he said in March.
