Downtown Port Washington will be decked out for the holidays during the annual Christmas on the Corners celebration Saturday, Dec. 4.

The event features activities for the entire family, including sales at downtown shops, an hour-long parade, tree lighting, caroling, photos with Santa, live reindeer and alpacas, a living Nativity and, to conclude the event, fireworks.

“We’re very excited about it,” said Barb Kobishop, co-organizer of the event. “We’ve worked to make this a Saturday full of activities for the entire family.

“It’s just magical, and people love to come to it.”

The event will follow the theme “Through the Years ... ” and complete the celebration of the City of Port Washington’s 175th anniversary.

“We thought it would be an appropriate way to end the year,” Kobishop said.

Christmas on the Corners, which will run from 3 to 7 p.m., will include a St. Nick’s stocking give-away, horse-and-carriage rides, strolling musicians, crafts, gift wrapping, cookie decorating and special events at downtown stores.

Many of the shops will offer refreshments during the event. Free photos with Santa will be offered at Port Washington State Bank.

The live Nativity will be at the corner of Franklin and Pier streets

The reindeer will be at the corner of Franklin and Main streets while alpacas will be outside North Shore Homes at the corner of Jackson and Franklin streets, weather permitting.

At 6 p.m., those attending are urged to go to the triangle at the corner of Jackson and Franklin streets for the annual community tree lighting.

Carols will be sung before Mayor Scott Huebner throws a switch to light the tree.

The parade will get under way at 6:15 p.m., with plenty of floats, bands, clowns and more to entertain the crowd.

The units will travel south on Franklin Street from the foot of St. Mary’s Hill to Grand Avenue, then west on Grand Avenue to Milwaukee Street.

A judge’s viewing area will be set up outside the former Lueptow’s Furniture building in the 200 block of Franklin Street. Prizes will be given for the floats that best represent the theme.

Immediately after the parade, a fireworks show will be set off over Lake Michigan from the former coal dock. It’s the only winter fireworks display in
the county, organizers said.
