Bertram decides to run in spring, meaning board vacancy must be filled

A change of heart led the Fredonia Village Board to decide last week to accept applications for a vacant trustee position.

At the board’s Nov. 7 meeting, Trustee Jill Bertram said she would be willing to resign her current post and be appointed to the seat vacated by Mark Edbauer Sr.

Edbauer resigned earlier in the month because he has moved out of the village.

Bertram’s appointment would have allowed her to serve as trustee until spring of 2015, and not have to run for re-election to a two-year term in 2014.

She told the board she was considering not seeking re-election in April.

The wheels fell off the office shuffle when Bertram told the board she had decided not to resign. Instead, Bertram said, she plans to run for a full two-year term in spring.

Trustees then voted to seek applicants for the remainder of Edbauer’s term, ignoring the option of making an appointment until next April and letting voters choose a trustee for the remaining year of the term.

Letters of interest from residents will be accepted at Village Hall. The board is expected to make an appointment in December.

With Edbauer’s resignation already in effect, the board approved Village President Chuck Lapicola’s appointment of Trustee Fritz Buchholtz as chairman of the Utilities Committee — the only village committee Edbauer chaired.
