Officials will not disclose suspected wrongdoing or the people involved 

The Belgium Village Board on Monday voted to refer what officials described only as a complaint to the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department for investigation of criminal wrongdoing.

Trustees, who met in closed session to discuss the matter, refused to say who filed the complaint or who it involved. They would not comment on whether it involved  a village employee, elected official or former elected official.

“The village president shall refer the matter discussed in closed session to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and consideration of possible charges against the person,” read the motion made by Trustee Eric Wilkowski.

Trustee Clem Gottsacker seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved by the board.

Capt. David Guss of the Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Tuesday the department received a request from the village to investigate the complaint. He said he has spoken to Village Attorney Gerald Antoine about the issue.

Village officials said they have been instructed by Antoine not to talk about the complaint until the issue has been investigated.

A source familiar with village issues who asked not to be identified said the complaint may involve unethical or illegal use of village computers or e-mail.
