The Village of Belgium’s clerk, treasurer and administrative assistant had their job duties updated and clarified on Monday.

The Village Board, on a recommendation from the Finance and Personnel Committee, approved additions to all three positions’ duties.

The list of duties for the clerk and treasurer now includes a line that makes them responsible for state statutory duties and items requested by the Village Board.

The board added a line to the administrative assistant’s duties that includes “additional duties as assigned by the village clerk and village treasurer.” 

“This will make it more streamlined,” Trustee Clem Gottsacker said.

Impetus for the change came from Treasurer Kelly Brinkman, who said last year she realized her job duties were stretching her too thin. In a 14-page report to the committee, Brinkman cited legislative changes in financial reporting and tracking since 2013 that added to her workload.

Some of the simpler tasks could be given to Administrative Assistant Sherri Erickson, Brinkman said.

New legislation requires sending notices to landlords whose tenants didn’t pay their utility bills on time, which Brinkman said took her four hours one day.

That’s one example of a task that isn’t “terribly difficult but insanely time consuming,” she said.
